The energy lost every year by UK industry in hot waste gas streams is equivalent to the burning of about nine million tonnes of coal (Mtce). Most of these hot waste gases are generated from kilns, ovens and furnaces. Along with labour and materials, energy represents a direct cost to industry and thus improving its utilisation will have a direct positive influence on profit margins. A simple guide to the implementation of heat recovery projects, based on examples found in the Energy Efficiency Demonstration Scheme is presented. It is intended to be useful to both technical and non-technical staff involved in furnace, oven or kiln management and process control and concentrates on the measures possible to recover waste heat from gases at temperatures > 400/sup 0/C.
