Separations Technology, Separations, and the Actinide Technology Division (ATD) are engaged in a development program to evaluate replacing the current FB-Line first stage precipitators (M2) with mixing ''T''s or static mixers. The incentives include increased utility and improved product quality. In addition, decreased radiation exposure can also be realized through easy maintenance of the mixing ''T'' or static mixers. This report documents the references and procedures used to design a mixing ''T'' as well as the results. The optimum dimensions of a mixing ''T'' for use in FB-Line to premix a small amount of hydrofluoric acid (HF) with a relatively large volume of the plutonium (Pu) feed has been calculated. The pipe should have an inside diameter (ID) of 1/8'' in order to achieve Reynolds number (Re) greater than 7 x 10 sup 3 for the Pu feed stream. The HF should be introduced through a 1/64'' ID jet. The length of the mixing tube should be not shorter than 11 cm. For this configuration, a pump will be needed to provide the additional head required for the HF jet. Specification of static mixers is in progress and will be presented in a separate report. A detailed test program regarding the testing facilities, schedule, and methods will be issued later.
