In the main report, the design of an advanced steam turbine capable of expanding 1500 deg F steam was presented. It featured a two stage turbine with an overhung rotor, which results in a practical low cost design quite similar to the power turbine on production gas turbine engines. Due to the dynamics of the overhung rotor, the turbine operating speed is between the second and third critical speeds. This requires the turbine to pass through critical speeds during each start up and shut down. A substantial amount of rotor and bearing dynamic analysis was done, and a satisfactory bearing design was established. Proprietary damper type tilt pad journal bearings were used to limit the vibration amplitude to acceptables values when passing through the critical speeds. Although the overhung rotor design is a well damped stable design, a straddle mounted rotor will be considered as an alternative. This addendum report summarizes the straddle mounted turbine design that includes several conservative design features in addition to the straddle-mounted rotor arrangement. (ERA citation 12:043474)
