This report outlines research at NIPER into the design of a fast, accurate, and precise method to determine the enthalpy for organic compounds and mixtures from ambient to the critical temperature, or in the case of a multi-component system, pseudo-critical point. The apparatus consists of a commercially available Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DCS) and specially designed sample cells capable of withstanding both high temperature and pressure without rupture. The report also outlines the determination of critical properties from the measurements made in this research. The results obtained in this research for benzene and decane are sufficient to prove the concept of using the differential scanning calorimeter with high-pressure cells to perform enthalpy and critical property measurements with good accuracy and precision. It is possible to use the temperatures at which conversion to a single phase occurs for several different cell fillings to map out the two-phase domain for a given compound. (ERA citation 14:008401)
