Evaluation of Computer-Aided Software Engineering Tools for Data Base Development.

More than 80 computer-aided software engineering (CASE) tools were evaluated to determine their usefulness in data base development projects. The goal was to review the current state of the CASE industry and recommend one or more tools for inclusion in the uniform development environment, a programming environment being designed by Argonne National Laboratory for the US Department of Defense Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, J-8 Directorate. This environment gives a computer programmer a consistent user interface and access to a full suite of tools and utilities for software development. In an effort to identify tools that would be useful in the planning, analysis, design, implementation, and maintenance of Argonne's data base development projects for the J-8 Directorate, we evaluated 83 commercially available CASE products. This report outlines the method used and presents the results of the evaluation.
