Matching asynchronous generators to small windmills

The aim was to discover the practical usage of standard asynchronous motors directly driven in small windmills for electric heating and for battery charging. These could take the place of the more expensive and specially designed generators normally used in wind turbines and thus could be interesting for developing countries. Testing took place on a lathe with an arm system fixed to the motor for the torque measurements which were used for the calculations related to the power on the shaft (Pin). Spring dynamometers, digital and analogic pointer instruments were made use of. The three phase water resistor (three electrodes with a device for adjusting their sinking in water) was used as a variable and pure resistive load. It is stated that the asynchronous machines are reliable, relatively inexpensive and can be purchased all over the world. They are also highly efficient.
