Development of a Basic Flight Instruction Tutoring System (BFITS) research Station

The Basic Flight Instruction Tutoring System (BFITS) was designed to observe and track the behavior of students as they attempt to learn basic flight procedures. Several modifications were required to adapt the BFITS to the needs of researchers at the United States Air Force Academy. These modifications were accomplished by a team of five cadets enrolled in Behavioral Sciences 473, Human Factors Engineering, and their instructor. A limited test and evaluation assured that the BFITS research station worked as desired. The BFITS is a rich resource for investigations of fundamental learning processes associated with novice pilot learning. It may be used extensively as a tool to support faculty and cadet investigations of those processes.
