Operation Iraqi Freedom: An Operational Opportunity to Complete the Strategic Objectives of Desert Storm

This paper will show that Operation Iraqi Freedoms operational success makes good the strategic shortcomings of Desert Storm and positions the United States and its coalition partners favorably to achieve policy goals in the region. To put this argument in perspective, the shortcomings of the first Gulf War, which occurred despite a stunning operational victory, will be examined. Next, although major military operations in Iraq have only recently concluded, several operationally significant military lessons learned during the first Gulf War were applied in the recent conflict. These lessons and their impact will be reviewed. Finally, arguments will be offered regarding the future posture best suited to achieve regional security goals. (26 refs.).
