A Note on Wave-Making Resistance of Catamarans

The wave-making resistance of the catamaran can be divided into two parts, one the resistance of each hull and the other the resistance increase due to the interference between two hulls. The resistance increase due to the interference can be further divided into two parts. The first part, the monotonic and positive term, is a monotonically decreasing function with respect to the increase of the product of speed parameter K sub o and distance parameter between the two hulls, K sub ok. For a catamaran with small distance between the two hulls, the wave-resistance increase due to this term is dominant over the second part. The second part, the oscillating term, which oscillates with respect to the speed parameter K sub o, does not change rapidly with respect to the distance between the two hulls. The ratio of the resistance increase due to the interference to the resistance of each hull is not appreciably affected by the changes in draft. (Author)
