Summary Report on Investigation of Miniature Valveless Pulse Jets

Eleven sizes and configurations of miniature valveless pulsejets were built and tested to determine performance and operational characteristics and to support this report on the general state of the art. When combined with ejector type intermittent jet thrust augmenters, the best performance was achieved with the HH-Ml pulsejet with augmenters, which produced 17 lb thrust with a Tsfc of 1.8 and a thrust augmentation ratio of 1.9. Thrust-to-combustor volume ratio for this basic pulsejet was 140 lb/cubic foot. With augmenters and enclosing shroud, the complete engine package would produce 20 lb/cubic foot. Thrust-to-weight ratios approached 12 to 1. Advantages of simplicity, low cost, and high combustion efficiency and heat transfer rates due to unsteady flow, make these engines well suited for heater-blower applications as well as having some potential for thrust applications.
