This is indicated by the many different tempering temperatures shown in Tables III and IV. The procedure shown in Table V was used for most of the specimens tested. Although the austenitizing treatments were conducted in a protective endothermic atmosphere, final machining or grinding removed any traces of decarburization. The tensile and shear specimens were tested in a Baldwin Universal Test Machine of 120,OCX) lbs. capacity, equipped with an autographic load-deformation recorder. Fatigue specimens were tested at a stress ratio of R=0.1 in Baldwin SF-10-U and SF-l-U Universal Fatigue Testing Machines equipped with 5:1 load multipliers. The low-cycle fatigue specimens were tested in modified Arcweld Creep Testing Machines of 12,000 lbs. capacity. A stress ratio of B=0 and a frequency of .02 cps. was maintained for all specimens.
