APPLICATION OF SIGNAL THEORY TO SIGNAL DETECTION.

Matched filters are often used in signal detection shemes. Using the field of signal theory and orthonormal functions as a basis, a method of synthesizing matched filters is presented. The mathematical background is developed and the theory is tested by obtaining an approximate matched filter for detecting a square pulse. This filter is simulated on an analog computer and detection of the square pulse is attempted with additive white noise also on the filter input. These tests show that the filter developed can detect the pulse as hoped. Additionally,the filter can be adjusted to match other signals within its processing range with ease. (Author)
