Tests for Strength Characteristics of a Schistose Gneiss. Preliminary Tests

This report presents the strength characteristics of schistose gneiss as revealed by laboratory tests for shear, compressive, and tensile strength of the material. Unconfined compression and direct tension tests were made of intact rock while triaxial compression tests were made of both intact and jointed rock. Jointed rock includes rock having natural healed or open joints plus artificial joints smoothly sawed in the laboratory. A method of encapsulating rock cores to which electrical resistance strain gages have been attached was developed during the course of the test program. The silicone rubber encapsulating medium fills in around the irregular surface resulting from the electrical instrumentation and effectively seals the openings against leakage of oil. This report summarizes and discusses the technical aspects of the results of these tests. (Author)
