Skin Sensitization Potential of the Riot Control Agents Ca, Dm, CN, and CS in Guinea Pigs

It has been reported that o-chlorobenzylidene malononitrile (CS) showed evidence of a skin-sensitizing potential in man. This prompted a basic study of the skin sensitization capacity of CS and three other riot control agents in guinea pigs. The agents were administered by the intradermal or topical routes, or both, over a period of several weeks. Following an incubation period, the animals were challenged with suberythemal doses and readings were taken after a 72-hr observation period. It was concluded that: (1) neither CA nor DM produces skin sensitization in guinea pigs when administered intradermally; and (2) both CN and CS produce skin sensitization in guinea pigs when administered intradermally or topically.
