A theoretical study was done on the creep of flexible fibers made from oriented glass reinforced plastic fibers under the influence of an equilibrium load distribution. A schematic diagram showed a uniform load distribution across a bent fiber, held rigidly at both ends. The deflection was assumed to be a function of distance from the center (x) and of time (t). Based on the assumption, a differential equation was given for the deflection in terms of nondimensional coordinates. A coordinate system was established for given boundary conditions. The deformation of the fiber was composed of elastic and viscoelastic components. The Maxwell equation was given for the case of isothermal creep with a single term for the spectrum of relaxation times. The equations were solved to obtain the stress, deformation, and deflection for different times. These values were given as functions of the logarithm of time for various values of the Maxwell parameters. (Author)
