Physiological Adjustments to Environmental Factors (Environmental Hazards to Biologic Systems)

The report summarizes the research activities for the period of September 1, 1969 to December 31, 1970. The following material outlines the objectives of the project. To develop the three following related areas: Techniques for the monitoring of physiological data, on-line computation of essential parameters, and data display techniques; Programs and techniques for reduction and analysis of data obtained in environmental studies; Mathematical models for physiological regulations and processes. The overall objectives of the experimantal work will be to quantitatively and dynamically characterize the following systems and functions: Physiological adjustments of men and animals to heat, cold, altitude, and work with integration of the effects of aging, physical condition, and status of physiological adaptation into these adjustments; Overall regulation of human thermal regulation; Biological rhythms in amphibians and mammals as affected by light, temperature and barometric pressure with particular emphasis on controlling mechanisms; Effects of environmental oxygen, sound and light on the nervous system.
