Applications of the finite element method (FEM) in geotechnical engineering have proliferated greatly, particularly in the latter half of the last ten years. The purpose of the Symposium on Applications of the Finite Element Method in Geotechnical Engineering was to review, to discuss, and to facilitate an interchange of information concerning recent developments in theory and applications, current activities, and future trends. Emphasis was placed on those aspects of the method that can be applied for analysis and design in soil and rock mechanics. Volume 1 contains the papers listed in Session 1 - (General, Review, and Theory), and Session 2 - (Dams, Excavations, and Slopes).
