An experimental and theoretical study was conducted to demonstrate the practicality of encoding multispectral signals derived from real imagery on a single piece of black and white film. Three video signals representing the primary colors were used to amplitude modulate three carrier frequencies chosen such that they form diffraction gratings with separable Fourier transforms. The three modulated carriers were then electronically added and used to modulate a laser beam which was recorded on black and white film. The encoded film transparency was then reconstructed in full color using an optical playback system. The use of phase gratings was also investigated and it was determined that phase gratings would allow rapid and inexpensive replication of encoded imagery for interpretation by multiple users. Testing was performed in the areas of achievable resolution, system transfer function, gamma tolerance, system crosstalk, and the use of phase gratings. (Author)
