Laying Errors Caused by Prism Mislevelment.

The report contains a qualitative study of the aiming errors induced by misleveling a sighting prism. This effort has been pursued to assist in the designing of several new laying systems. The principal design consideration is the orientation between the theodolite and the prism. The error generated by a mislevel prism can be additive or subtractive. This error is dependent upon the direction of rotation or mislevel of the dihedral edge of the prism with respect to the theodolite line of sight. The report shows the relationship between (1) prism rotation about a horizontal plane, (2) prism mislevel,and (3) orientation and placement of the prism and theodolite with respect to the local horizontal plane of reference,all of which affect the resulting missile azimuth error.
