Recursive Plane Analysis (RPA) is presented as a new analysis tool for calculating the complete response of any non-uniform, signal-dependent sampling device with a unit memory to periodic input signals. Pulse Interval Modulation (PIM) and Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM) devices are used as vehicles for numerous examples presented to demonstrate the application of RPA to engineering problems. The complete response of PIM and PFM modulators to periodic excitation is shown to be the solution to a non-linear finite difference equation. A simple graphical procedure is developed for calculating both the transient and steady state solutions to this equation. (Author Modified Abstract)
