Work Role Motivation as a Predictor of Success in Navy Paramedical Training.

Nine questionnaire items which assessed motivation for working in the Navy health care specialties were administered to 3847 students at the beginning of Hospital Corpsman (HM) and Dental Technician (DT) class 'A' school training. When the item responses were related to a school completion criterion, it was found that the stronger the stated preference for health care work, the less the reliance placed upon the recruiter for guidance into the HM or DT specialties, the greater the perceived congruency between a student's abilities and interests and those required on the job, and the greater the expressed satisfaction with having been assigned to a Navy paramedical job, the greater were the student's chances of graduation from training. A work role motivation measure was developed from these items and the potential usefulness of this measure for the selection and classification of recruits into the HM occupational group was demonstrated. Suggestions were made for further research to refine this work role motivation measure.
