Functioning of the Omega Sensor on Textile Samples Under High Loading Rates.

The Omega sensor was developed for measuring stress in textile and other flexible materials. As a first application,it was intended to measure stresses in the material of parachute canopies. In an earlier study,it was found that circumferential stresses of inflated parachute canopies indicated by Omega sensors agreed with theoretically predicted stresses. The question then arose whether or not sensor indicated stresses are realistic under a high rate of loading,since it is known that the strain of nylon and other textile materials varies with the rate of loading. This study investigates this question and no dynamic effects upon the Omega sensor or the indicated stresses were found. (Modified author abstract)
