Vapor Pressures and Heats of Sublimation of Some High Melting Organic Explosives.

To determine the suitability of proposed organic explosives for space shuttle vehicle applications,heats of sublimation of the proposed explosives were determined as well as semi-quantitative data in regard to their physical and chemical stabilities. Heats of sublimation were derived from vapor pressure data which were obtained by the Langmuir method,wherein measurements are made of the rates of sublimation at constant temperature. Vapor pressure measurements were attempted for each of three explosives (viz., TPT, ONT,and PYX) at each of seven different temperatures in the range of 57C to 310C. Heat resistant qualities of these explosives were determined by (1) analyzing for chemical purity after heating to determine the presence of decomposition products,and (2) observing physical changes which took place as a result of the heating.
