The Effect of Psychiatric Hospitalization in Crisis.

Twenty-two hundreds naval enlisted men (1667 Navy, 553 Marine Corps) who had been hospitalized on a psychiatric ward were studied to determine the efficacy of short term hospitalization. Men who were lower in rank, E-5 or below, but who had achieved promotions commensurate with their time in service, and who were diagnosed situational maladjustment or personality disorder, were successfully treated with short-term hospitalization. The doctor's decision to use short-term treatment was demonstrated to be sound for special diagnostic groups among the psychiatric caseload of an impatient service.
