Application of Oxygen to Treat Waste from Military Field Installations.

The waste stabilization pond operating at a loading of 250lb resulted in a removal of 97.7percent of BOD, 92.6percent of COD, 84.2percent of TOD,and 80percent of TOC. The average enteric virus inactivation was 88percent and 94percent for the coliphage and animal viruses respectively. The bacterial dieoff was in excess of 98percent for the total coliform,fecal coliform and fecal streptococcus. The introduction of high purity oxygen to waste stabilization pond systems increased the removal efficiency of BOD5,COD, TOD,and TOC in excess of 98.6percent, 94.6percent, 89percent,and 90percent,respectively at an organic loading of 250lb BOD5/acre-day. The inactivation of enteric viruses and dieoff of enteric bacteria also improved. Complete inactivation of the enteric viruses in the effluents of the bond systems was achieved at a chlorine residual of 0.5mg/l after 30minutes of contact. Virus concentration with bentonite was effective in recovering approximately 50percent of the virus.
