Survey Level Report of the Madison to Highway 64 Channel Cleanout Project Item 2 Cross and St. Francis Counties, Arkansas.

A intensive survey for prehistoric, historic and architectural properties within the planned Madison to Highway 64 channel cleanout Project, located in Cross and St. Francis Counties, Arkansas, was conducted in June, July, and August, 1978. The study methods included a review of published literature, a review of county, state, and federal archival sources, a cartographic review, interviews with local informants, intensive field examination, and archaeological analysis of artifact collections. A total of 43 sites was inventoried during field examination. The cultural resources include prehistoric properties dating from the ARchaic, Woodland, and Mississipian Periods. Archaic Period components have been identified at two of the prehistoric sites, and nine sites produced evidence of occupation during the Woodland and Mississippian Periods. Two sites are considered eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places and both will be adversely impacted by the proposed project. A range of plans for impact mitigation is developed including avoidance of the sites, in situ preservation salvage.
