Using Graphite Filament Compositions as a Die Material.

Technological advances in graphite filament-reinforced compounds have provided a material adaptable for use in propellant extrusion operations. Two graphite composite formulations were selected for evaluation. Each contained 30% graphite and 15% Teflon, with the remaining constituent being nylon and polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), respectively. Dies were fabricated from the above materials and were compared with Delrin dies, currently used in propellant manufacturing operations, to establish wear and failure characteristics. An additional die fabricated from stainless steel and coated with Teflon was also evaluated. The stainless steel-Teflon coated die and the graphite composite formulation containing PPS were found to be superior to the other dies. An economic evaluation indicated that the graphite die would be more desirable for extended production use. (Author)
