A study of the land ownership resources in the two potential deployment regions is important because of the relatively large amounts of land that will be required to be disturbed by the MX project. Although only about 25 NM(2) will be fenced for the system, another 116 to 121 NM(2) will be used for the life of the project for military purposes but will also be open to public use. Of these 76 to 92 NM(2) will be roadways. These roadways will provide both needed access to remote areas, and make possible undesirable trespass onto both public and private lands. In addition to the above cited area requirements, another 53 to 55 NM(2) of public/state, and private land will be disturbed during the construction phase of the project. Upon completion of the construction phase of the project, these areas will revert to their original use and ownership rights. During the construction phase these lands and adjoining lands could be subject to certain problems resulting from construction activities, such as dust, noise, and potential problems of human activity including pilfering and possible vehicle accidents.
