The basic question is whether or not the present equipment and training provided to combat service support (CSS) units in division and corps rear areas are capable of defeating the Soviet rear threat in any future battle. Ongoing rear area protection (RAP) doctrinal and equipment changes are reviewed in detail together with an analysis of the US Army's historical record of implementing needed changes in RAP capability. A critical assessment is made of the growing Soviet multifaceted threat to the division and corps rear areas. An extensive examination is made of the division and corps CSS units' ability to defeat or delay the Soviet threat in any future conflict. The conclusion is presented that Army CSS units are receiving neither the necessary equipment nor training to cope with the threat as outlined. Recommendations are made in both equipment and training to insure CSS unit survivability in any future conflict against Soviet threat capabilities.
