摘要

Ceramics have many ideal properties for use as bone replacements. Ceramics composed of aluminum, calcium and phosphorous oxides (ALCAP) are slowly resorbed and eventually replaced with new bone. Since ALCAP ceramics offer tremendous potential, this investigation was designed to test the biocompatibility and toxicity of ALCAP ceramics by conducting hemolysis and rabbit muscle implant tests. The data obtained in this investigation confirm earlier findings that calcium aluminate ceramics are non-toxic when tested by the muscle implant test. According to Wilson and co-workers, any material that does not inhibit growth and division of cells in culture, allows close contact of living cells at its surface and does not contain leachable inflammatory substances should be considered biocompatible. ALCAP has been shown to be non-mutagenic and non-cytotoxic. The hemolysis test and muscle implant test confirm the earlier findings that ALCAP ceramics are non-toxic and biocompatible.
