This document outlines a four-part specification for a prototype WIS DBMS. Section 2.0 provides a detailed view of a modular, layered DBMS architecture. While the architecture was not designed to support a particular DBMS model (hierarchical, relational or network), an appropriate implementation would allow the realization of any of these models. However, due to the clarity and formality of the relational model, relational support modules are emphasized. In addition, this emphasis assures that relational model concerns are addressed when other model types are being supported within this scheme. Security and access considerations are addressed within the architecture model, and specific attention given to these issues during the specification of the modules and layering design. Section 3.0 presents a framework for the implementation of a security component for an ada DBMS. Two fundamental approaches to the design of a secure DBMS are discussed, a closed system and a less restrictive system. Appropriate features of both approaches are then combined to form the final framework design. Issues such as operating system security (reuse of objects and garbage collection), hardware controls (Privileged user modes), operational policy (password protection) and security policy (which users have access to which objects) are addressed. Both mandatory and discretionary controls are considered for access to and flow of information within the DBMS.
