Thermal Stress in RAN (Royal Australian Navy) Sea King Helicopter Operations

The report deals with thermal stress in aircrew operating in the cabin and cockpit environment of the RAN's Sea King helicopter. The high thermal loads experienced in the helicopter have previously been established and various options for ameliorating the conditions have also been proposed. A review of the literature on thermal stress research is presented. The development of an Index of Thermal Stress for the Sea King (SKITS) is reported along with the results of a study to determine the ameliorating effect of blown cooled air directed at the faces of subjects in a thermal chamber.
