In this reporting period data for the physiochemical properties of the Pt/Solidpolymer electrolyte interface were obtained using cyclic voltammetry and potential pulse techniques. The oxygen diffusion coefficient in Nafion was determined to be 7.4 10-7cm2.s. Several single cells were assembled and their performance at different current densities tested. The maximum power density achieved was 1.4W/cm2 with a 50 microns thick membrane and electrodes with high Pt loading at 90 C and pressure of 5atm. A design for a fuel cell stack is proposed meeting the requirements for 7W/kg specific power density. The current collectors are from gold plated titanium. High flow rate of oxygen will be used in order to achieve high heat transfer rate between the stack and the gas flow as well aS removal of the product water. (jes)
