摘要

Argonne National Laboratory has completed screening measurements of indoor radonconcentrations at 51 Army stand-alone housing areas located throughout the continental United States. The measurements were done in accord with the existing Army Radon Program. Quality assurance aspects of the project included the use of controls, spiked samples, and field replicates, as indicated by the Army Radon Program. In all, 1,117 alpha track detectors, manufactured by Tech/Ops Landauer of Glenwood, IL, were deployed in September 1989 in a total of 892 residential structures. The monitoring period was a nominal 90 days. A total of 818 detectors have been returned. Returned detectors, as well as controls and spikes, were analyzed by Tech/Ops Landauer. A total of 55 housing structures exhibited radon concentrations equal to or greater than 4.0 pCi/L (picocuries per liter), the level identified by the Army Radon Program above which follow-up measurements or mitigative actions are required. Housing units exceeding 4.0 pCi/L were in the following locations: Ansonia, Shelton, and Westport, Connecticut; Addison and Worth, Illinois; Burlington and Randolph, Massachusetts; Watertown, New York; Dorseyville, Elizabeth, Elrama, and Hermine, Pennsylvania; Newport News, Virginia; and Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. Keywords: Radar, Monitoring, Army housing, Radiation pollution, ANL. (JG)
