Comparison of Different Synthetic Routes for Sulfonation of Polyaniline

Polyanilines containing sulfonic groups covalently bonded to the back weresynthesized from parent polyaniline via sulfonation of the polymer utilizing differing sulfonation agents and differing means. The sulfonation conditions were studied as a function of several parameters including sulfonation time, starting forms of the precursor polymer, presence of oxidizer, ((NH4)2S2O8), and temperature. The sulfonated polyanilines were characterized by FTIR, elemental analyses, DC conductivity and electrochemical methods. It was found that using fuming sulfuric acid as the sulfonation agent gave both higher conductivity and higher sulfonation level for sulfonated polyaniline than implementation of other sulfonation agents and means.
