The oxidation of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide over a monolithic automotive-typecatalyst has been investigated at temperatures between 300 and 400 deg C and concentrations between 1 and 100 ppm in dry air. 2-Chloroethyl ethyl sulfide was investigated as a model compound for mustard as part of an on-going research effort aimed at characterizing oxidation reactions over commercially available catalysts. Results indicate that external mass transfer resistances are strongly limiting the observed reaction rate. Data were correlated using a distributed parameter model which assumed the flow within the channel of the monolith to be laminar and that the oxidation reaction was first order (globally) at the catalyst surface. The model was able to accurately correlate the experimental data over the entire range of conditions investigated.... Reactor design, Catalytic oxidation, Air purification, Collective protection.
