Artificial grass regeneration of ski-slopes: evaluation of grass mixtures and novel seeding techniques

A trial was carried out in 3 sites of the eastern Italian Alps (from 1300 to 2500 m a.s.l.) in order to evaluate different artificial grass regeneration techniques of ski-slopes. 4 grass mixtures, 4 seedbeds and 2 fertilization levels were compared during a 3 year period. The seedinq methods compared were: (i) black-green (hand sowing, straw cover and distribution of fixing emulsion), (ii)curlex (hydro-sowing and consecutive cover with wood shaving bio-mats, (iii) test-hum (hydro-sowing with replicated applications, 1.5-2 cm in thickness) and (iv)trix (hydrosowing with an only organic compound application, 0.5 cm in thickness). The grass mixtures were formulated for (i) high altitude, (ii) <(medium altitude, (iii) soil preparation and (iv) large spectrum uses. Fertilization: (i) mineral fertilazation, (ii) no fertilization. The trix and test-hum techniques performed better than the curlex and biack-green techniques while the test-hum technique was the best at the highest altitude expecially when combined with the grass mixture prepared for 《high altitude》. Mineral fertilization was proper at high altitude and not proper at low altitudes, because of excessive grass growth. The trial confirmed there are several technical solutions in the most favourable pedoclimatic conditions and few solutions in extreme conditions, where the best performing species were Achillea millefolium L., Festuca nigrescens lain., Festuca trachyphylla (Hackel) Krajina, Poa compressa L.
