We have studied the hysteresis losses in YBCO tapes in magnetic fields oriented nearly parallel to their surface (ab plane). The magnetic moment is considerably hysteretic when the applied field is oriented very close to the tape. Following an analysis published earlier [Phys. Rev. B 62 (2000) 14452], we show that the parallel-field moment is the dominant contributor to the hysteresis loss unless the c-axis component of applied field penetrates considerably. By measuring the transverse moment that is orthogonal to the applied field, we investigated the magnetic moment along the c-axis, which in other cases dominates the hysteresis loss due to the shape effect.
