A field experiment was conducted for two successive years during 2008-09 and 2009-10 to evaluate the efficacy of granular insecticides in comparison with the foliar sprays against early shoot borer and internode borer. Chilo infuscatellus Snellen on sugarcane. Among the granular insecticides, carbofuran 3G @ 33 kg/ha (23.47 %, 2.35%) and fipronil 0.3G@ 25 kg/ha (26.20%, 5.54%) significantly reduced the incidence of early shoot borer and intermode borer as compared to untreated control (69.3%, 21.50%)by recording the highest per cent reductions of early shoot borer (80.61, 76.63) and internode borer (89.07, 78.88) over control and were statistically at par with each other. The next best treatments were spray of spinosad 45SC (18.74% DH), soil application of sevidol 4+4 G (26.99% DH) and detrashing followed by spraying of endosulfan 35EC @ 2 m/lt (28.20% DH) with the percent reductions of 72.97, 61.07 and 59.31 respectively, over control. Of the chemicals sprayed foliar sprays of spinosad 45SC at 30,60,90 and 120 DAP were statistically at par with the soil incorporation of fipronil 0.3G at 0,45,90 and 120 DAP and significantly different from other treatments. The superior cane yields were recorded in carbofuran 3G (85.40 t/ha) and fipronil 0.3G (84.15 t/ha) as compared to untreated control (76.30 t/ha). All the insecticidal treatmens were significantly superior over untreated control. The descending order of effectiveness of granual and foliar treatments in managing early shoot borer in the present study was, carbofuran 3G, fipronil 0.3G, spinosad 45SC, sevidol 4 + 4G, detrashing followed by spray of endosulfan 35EC, acetamiprid 20 SP, indoxacarb 15.8EC, fipronil 0.3G and thiodicarb 75SP.
