European Commission says no to slashing REACH fees

It would be financially unsound for the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) if the European Commission agreed to cut back REACH fees, commission vice president Gunter Verheugen said in a written answer this month to a letter from a member of the European Parliament. The statement follows Italian center right MEP Mario Mauro's letter to the commission in May. Mauro asked the commission if it intended to launch measures to overcome short to medium-term financial difficulties "to guarantee industry's future and the survival of [small and medium-sized enterprises] which have to comply with REACH obligations."
