Insecticidal Properties of Methanolic Extract of Allium sativum L. and its Fractions against Plutella xylostella (L.)

Studies on insecticidal properties of garlic, Allium sativum L. against Plutella xylostelia (L.) were conducted under laboratory conditions. First instar larvae were allowed to feed on cabbage leaves treated with methanolic extract of garlic and its fractions for 48 h and then transferred to normal food. Different parameters like larval survival (36.7-83.3%) larval period (8-13 days), larval weight (2.73-3.77 mg), pupation (20.0-67.7%), adult emergence (16.7-63.3%), fecundity (44.3-64.0 eggs) were adversely affected in different treatments of extract and fractions. Contact toxicity bioassay results indicated maximum mortality (66.7%) of first instar larvae in 5.0% methanol extract followed by 2.0% hexane fraction (63.3%).
