Magnetic fields of stars: using stars as tools for understanding the origins of cosmic magnetic fields

I survey the status of research on the detection and quantitative measurement of stellar magnetic fields, and discuss theoretical ideas which try to account for the origins of these magnetic fields, consistent with present observations. [References: 80]
