Since the days of Henry Ford and Ms contemporaries, a drive train has included a manual gearbox, whereby the driver or operator selects the best gear out of a limited number of available fixed gear ratios, for a specific situation. Or an automatic transmission allows the appropriate gear to be automatically selected from the available fixed ratios according to some algorithm and driver response. Today, some motor manufacturers combine manual and automatic gearboxes under a variety of brand names and, in heavy equipment, the so-called power shift gearbox is used. All these applications suffer the disadvantage of having a limited gear ratio selection. The gears are discrete which results in the engine not always operating at optimum performance, power or fuel consumption and shock loads occur when gear changes take place.
