As an occupation, energy management is still relatively young and is consequently still undergoing profound changes. Thus, it is vital for energy managers to ensure they develop their skills and qualifications in order to maintain employability and stay at the forefront of the profession. In the last 10 to 20 years there has been a shift in energy management from the boiler room into the office, partly as a result of the increased focus on demand management and the implementation of continuous improvement programmes. This development requires energy managers to have a significantly different skill set, with finance, management and commercial skills assuming greater importance.
