Sexually mature zebrafish (Danio rerio) were exposed for 21 days to low concentrations (0.5 and 2 ppm) of the coconut oil-based surfactant fatty alcohol sulfate (CFAS). Using a static renewal system with replacement every 24 h, the effect on the following were recorded- mortality rate, number of viable eggs, gonadal morphology, median hatching time and percent hatchability. No significant differences were noted between the control and those exposed to the test concentrations in most of the observed parameters. These findings suggest that sublethal concentrations of CFAS do not adversely affect zebrafish survival and reproduction.
