The concept of dynamic barrier management (DBM) involves using real-time or near real-time information from multiple sources to track the continuous status of technical, operational and organisational safety barriers that are diverse in nature and degrade at different rates.1 Some examples of technical barriers are for containment, controlling ignition sources, emergency power, fire/gas detection and protection, flaring and ventilation. Operational barriers include design, maintenance, modifications, operations and work processes. Some organisational barriers are communication, competences, controls and checks, documentation, procedures, responsibilities, work practices and verification.
