Mesosulfuron-methyl, a new grass herbicide for cereal production

Mesosulfuron-methyl is a new herbicidal active ingredient that was discovered in 1993 in the laboratories of the then Hoechst Schering AgrEvo GmbH. Its action is based on the inhibition of the enzyme acetolactate synthase. Mesosulfuron-methyl is usedpost-emergence in the spring in soft and durum wheat, triti-cale and rye. Its principal action is in the control of weed grasses. To improve the crop tolerability, all commercial formulations contain the safener mefenpyr-di-ethyl. To complete the weed control spectrum against dicotyledons, a number of formulations with various quantities of iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium have been developed.
