Motion is important in many applications, both in image processing and computer vision. In this paper, we will discuss some aspects of motion analysis and motion estimation, with a special emphasis on the use of directional filters and orientations tensors. First, we will establish the fundamentals of motion analysis and then consider some of the nontrivial problems of motion estimation. From a large variety of different approaches, we have chosen to focus on directional filters, the use of signal phase, and the orientation of phase fronts for the estimation of optical flow. We will also show that a multiresolution method is needed when we want to estimate speeds of more than about two picture elements.
