Iran’s recent efforts to break the political impasse over its nuclear programme and ease the pressure of US and EU sanc-tions on its oil sector is rekindling hopes among European oil majors for a return to the country’s oil and gas sector. “There is a political solution hope-fully on the horizon over the next few years,” Shell chief executive Peter Voser says. “In the longer term Iran’s hydrocar-bon resources will have to be developed in order to feed the world market.” Iran’s new oil minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh — who held the same post in 1997-2005 and lured Shell, Total, Norwegian state-controlled Statoil and Italy’s Eni into the country’s upstream — is sending prom-ising messages on policy.
