US environment agency the EPA is helping to lock in future demand for natural gas, at the expense of coal. The EPA on 20 September proposed a rule that would require new coal-fired power plants to capture up to half of their CO2 emissions. The proposal would limit CO2 emissions from new coal-fired power plants to 1,100 lb/MWh (499 kg/MWh). Conventional coal-fired plants emit about 1,800 lb/MWh. Gas-fired facilities would have to meet an even more stringent cap of 1,000 lb/MWh. But the most efficient gasfired plants operating today can meet that standard without installing CO2 controls.
